Gruenebaum helps Crew claim a point in New England
Jun 17, 2012 - 1:49 AM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew didn't put together its best performance of the campaign on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, but it was good enough for a 0-0 draw with the New England Revolution that extends the club's unbeaten run to six games. The Crew had goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum to thank for keeping the team in the match in the first half, while chances dried up a bit for both sides after the break.
New England started quickly and nearly scored in the opening minute as Benny Feilhaber shot just wide of the far post.
Gruenebaum came to the rescue in the 15th minute when Jose Moreno was played in behind the Crew defense, only for the 'keeper to charge off his line and smother the shot.
Saer Sene came closer for the Revs in the 29th when he got free to unleash a left-footed shot that Gruenebaum got just enough of to tip onto the crossbar.
Fernando Cardenas was next to have a go at Gruenebaum as he fired a shot on goal from close range that the 'keeper did well to stop.
Despite outplaying Columbus in the first half, the Revs had nothing to show for it and struggled to replicate that offensive success in the second 45 minutes.
The best chance for either side arrived in the 65th minute as the Crew's Emilio Renteria missed the target from a few yards.
Columbus will not be overly impressed with its performance, but the club is unbeaten in its last four away games, while the Revs were held without a goal for the first time in six matches.
