Galaxy, 'Quakes set for final California Clasico

Sep 13, 2014 - 7:52 PM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The 2014 season's final edition of the California Clasico will be played on Sunday as the San Jose Earthquakes welcome the Los Angeles Galaxy to Buck Shaw Stadium.

San Jose will be desperate for three points on Sunday after suffering a 2-0 loss on Wednesday to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place that left the club 10 points out of the fifth and final playoff place in the West.

San Jose fell behind in the 39th minute as 'Quakes defender Victor Bernardez bundled over Vancouver's Kendall Waston in the box at a free kick in the 37th minute, and after referee Jose Carlos Rivero pointed to the spot, Pedro Morales stepped up to drill the penalty past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Whitecaps FC then doubled their advantage in the 56th minute when Waston powered home a Morales corner with a sharp header from the heart of the area, through the legs of Cordell Cato on the goal line.

"It was a disappointing game," Quakes coach Mark Watson said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, they're a good team. I think as much as they were the better team on the night, we gave them two goals off of set pieces, which is something you can't do, especially on the road, and expect a result.

"We're just finding ways every game to concede goals. I thought Vancouver was a better team on the night. But we gave them two, what I think were, soft goals off of set pieces and, especially on the road, you can't do that and expect to get a result," Watson added.

The Galaxy, meanwhile, saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday after being held to a 2-2 draw by the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo.

Montreal grabbed a 2-0 first-half lead courtesy of goals from Marco Di Vaio and Ignacio Piatti, but the Galaxy battled back in the second 45 minutes.

The Galaxy pulled a goal back in the 59th minute. Juninho blasted a low diagonal pass from the right into the box. No one got a touch on it until it reached Gyasi Zardes at the far post, who calmly tapped it home.

Two minutes later the Galaxy were level. From the edge of the area, Landon Donovan managed to slip the ball through to Robbie Keane on the left. Keane's low cross found a sliding Alan Gordon, who bundled the ball over the line from close range.

"Give our guys credit, but we weren't good on the night," Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said. "We didn't play well. So to get a point [after being] down two goals, I guess you can't complain a whole lot, but on the night, we weren't good."
