Fire hope to stay hot against Sporting
May 1, 2015 - 9:02 PM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Fire will attempt to continue their winning ways at Sporting Kansas City on Sunday as the club eyes a fourth successive triumph.Chicago started the season with a three-game losing streak, but the club has rebounded to record three successive victories, including a 1-0 triumph over New York City FC last time out.
Fire Designated Player David Accam opened his MLS account with the lone goal against NYC in his second MLS start, and head coach Frank Yallop is expecting even better things from his forward.
"David is probably not at his best quite yet, I don't think, but he's very exciting obviously, [and] there's a lot more to come from him," Yallop said. "David's an exciting player, and he's excited to be here. I thought he played fantastic and, you'll have to ask him, but there's still more in him I think. He could be a little more attack-minded."
Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded his second successive clean sheet in the win, and he has now gone 249 minutes without conceding a goal.
Scoring goals was not the problem for Sporting in a 4-4 draw with the Houston Dynamo last time out as the club came from 3-1 down to snatch a point against the Dynamo.
Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes acknowledged that his side was poor in the game at times, but was pleased with the fight his team showed and how they managed to get something from the match.
"In a lot of respects, we didn't deserve to get anything coming out of here," Vermes said following the draw. "The only thing I'll say is that at that moment, during the course of the game, we were very good and we didn't give up."
Krisztian Nemeth continued his good run of form for Sporting as he netted a third goal in four games to help bolster the team's attack as last season's leading scorer, Dom Dwyer, continues to try and rediscover his form having scored just twice this season.
If Chicago is going to continue its winning run the club will have to overcome recent struggles at Sporting Park with the team taking just two points from its last four trips to Kansas City.
