Hawks swoop on Swans AFL star Tom Mitchell
Oct 12, 2016 - 7:05 AM Hawthorn's busy AFL trade period continued on Wednesday when the Hawks swooped on star Sydney midfielder Tom Mitchell. The move came on the same day shock news of a potential Sam Mitchell trade to West Coast emerged.
The Hawks landed the 23-year-old after agreeing to send the Swans their first-round pick - No.14 overall - at the coming draft.
The clubs will also swap late-round draft picks in a deal that will be formalised next week.
"Tom has had a fantastic season for the Swans, particularly in the second half of the year," Hawks list manager Graham Wright said.
"He's a high-quality person and, at only 23 years of age, has plenty of football ahead of him.
"Tom has the flexibility to play multiple positions but we believe he'll primarily play as an inside midfielder."
Mitchell played 65 games for the Swans after he was taken as a father-son pick (No.21) at the 2011 draft.
The Hawks are also intent on snaring star Gold Coast youngster Jaeger O'Meara during the trade period.
They had already landed former Richmond key forward Ty Vickery, who joined the club on Monday as a free agent.
