Lions are AFLW underdogs no more: Harris
Feb 14, 2017 - 4:24 AM Brisbane have happily shed their underdog tag after two wins from two tough road trips to open the AFL Women's season. The third-placed Lions joined Adelaide and Carlton as the competition's unbeaten sides on Sunday when they overcame Fremantle.
Brisbane marquee Tayla Harris earned a Rising Star nomination for her 12-possession, two-goal performance against the Dockers.
The 19-year-old is delighted with the accolade, but even more thrilled by a start to the season that was largely unexpected outside the club.
"It's a new competition and no one genuinely knew - it was all speculation - but I think we have proved ourselves," Harris said on Tuesday.
"I don't think the underdogs title is going to be valid any more.
"I thought we could (start well) ... I knew we had the potential and the people to do it.
"We have a huge amount of support and we have a lot of spirit in our team.
"The fact that we have done it means that we've worked hard enough and can do what we set our minds to."
Last week's win followed on from an impressive season-opening victory against the Demons in Melbourne.
After criss-crossing the country in the past fortnight, the Lions will play their first home game on Saturday against winless Collingwood at South Pine Sports Complex.
"I'd suggest people come down a bit earlier ... maybe camp out like you're waiting for Justin Bieber tickets," Harris said.
"It's going to be really exciting.
"I expect nothing less than a decent crowd ... I'm sure there's going to be a fair bit of support especially because of our success so far."
