Ashmore's wonder AFLW goal sparks Lions

Feb 25, 2017 - 8:28 AM Kaitlyn Ashmore booted a goal of the season contender in Brisbane's 34-point victory over Greater Western Sydney in the AFLW.

The Lions dominated their opponents winning 6.7 (43) to 1.3 (9) to give them a perfect four wins from four and put them top of the table ahead of Adelaide's game in Fremantle on Sunday. The Giants have one draw from their four games.

Ashmore first booted the ball from hand into the forward fifty then chased it up with a grubber kick before hitting a soccer off the ground from an impossible angle in the forward pocket, in a goal reminiscent of Adelaide Crows champion Eddie Betts.

"I want to say (I did mean it) but I saw Sammy (Virgo) running into the square so I tried to kick it to her and it bounced the right way - I'll claim it," Ashmore said.

"I was secretly thinking please don't touch it."

Ashmore grabbed another goal in the fourth quarter and Kate McCarthy also scored twice, bringing her season total to five, with Jordan Membrey and Sabrina Frederick-Traub also kicking majors.

Kate Stanton kicked a consolation late on for the Giants in front of an estimated 3,500 at the South Pine Sports Complex.

Ashmore's fellow forward Frederick-Traub was particularly impressive, ending the game with a game high six marks and a joint-team high 13 disposals, to go with the goal she snapped opportunistically when the ball fell to her after a ruck contest.

The win sets Brisbane up for a massive top of the ladder game next week at Adelaide's Norwood Oval, a match Ashmore admits the Lions have long had marked on their calendar.

"We try to go game to game but everyone's been talking about it," Ashmore said.

"It's the biggest game of the season next week. It's our first (free-to-air) televised game.

"It'll be a great challenge to show Adelaide how we can play."

Giants coach Tim Schmidt lauded the Lions performance, pointing at their pressure around the ball as being key to their success and hard for opponents to replicate.

"They showed exactly why they're undefeated," Schmidt said.

"We knew exactly what they would bring. Their pressure and intensity has been super and it was the same today."
