Sydney Swan Cunningham out for six weeks
May 22, 2017 - 1:02 AM Sydney will be without injured young gun Harry Cunningham for the next six weeks of the AFL season, while Kieren Jack and Sam Naismith are no certainties to return from injury against Hawthorn on Friday night. The Swans have posted three consecutive wins, bouncing back in style after a miserable 0-6 start to the season.
Injuries have been a near-constant annoyance for Swans coach John Longmire this year and Monday provided more of the same.
Longmire confirmed former captain Jarrad McVeigh is no chance of returning from a hamstring injury against the Hawks.
Jack and Naismith will be racing the clock and need to train well if they're to play at the SCG.
Cunningham hurt his right foot in the club's comfortable win over St Kilda.
Scans confirmed it's a Lisfranc injury, the same ligament that caused Collingwood gun Dane Swan so much trouble in 2016.
However, Cunningham has suffered a partial tear as opposed to a fracture.
"He'll go into a boot and fortunately he's avoided surgery," Longmire said.
"Which is a good thing, because if you have surgery it's the season over. He's avoided that. It's bad enough to miss six weeks but not bad enough for surgery.
"You always have them (injuries) ... swings and roundabouts.
"You've just got to be able to deal with that, we've been pleased with the players we've had coming into the team. We feel as though we've got some players in good form in our reserves who can come in as well."
If Jack hasn't recovered from a hip injury that has kept him out of action since round five then Jordan Dawson and Oliver Florent headline the players in the mix to replace Cunningham.
