Eagles' Mitchell angry at spit allegation
Sep 11, 2017 - 6:05 AM West Coast veteran Sam Mitchell says he was left seething after being accused of spitting at an opponent, claiming the allegation is way off the mark.Mitchell was accused in media reports of spitting in the direction of Port Adelaide's Sam Gray during last week's AFL elimination final win at Adelaide Oval.
Vision showed Mitchell hunched over and spitting on the ground late in the third quarter after giving away a free kick to Gray, who was still on the ground.
However, the camera angle showing the moment was deceiving, with Gray actually out of the vicinity of where Mitchell spat.
Mitchell insists he would never spit at an opponent.
"It pissed me right off to be honest," Mitchell said of the allegation.
"Clearly I didn't spit on anyone, try to spit on anyone, or spit near anyone.
"The umpire's a metre away and didn't say anything. Gray's a metre away and didn't say anything.
"It happens 10,000 times a game from every player.
"It's probably not a good look spitting at all on the football field, but it's a bit late for me to change it.
"I was pretty disappointed with the way it was reported."
Mitchell looms as a key figure in Saturday night's semi-final showdown with GWS at Spotless Stadium.
And while fans are still on a high following Luke Shuey's after-the-siren match winner against Port, Mitchell said the players need to start focusing on the next challenge.
"While everyone else is celebrating, we need to be preparing," Mitchell said.
"The great challenge for us right now is trying to come down, because everyone's so happy.
"But that's gone. That game is finished. We need to move on with this week's game, and prepare as best we can."
The Giants were dealt a huge blow on Monday when it was confirmed star forward Jeremy Cameron would miss the rest of the finals with a hamstring injury.
And ruckman Shane Mumford is in doubt for Saturday's clash because of a foot injury.
