Bulldog Boyd joins Magpies as AFL coach
Sep 12, 2017 - 3:16 AM Western Bulldogs premiership defender Matthew Boyd is now an AFL development coach at Collingwood.Boyd has made a quick transition to coaching after retiring at the end of the home and away season.
He was seen late last month having a coffee with Magpies coach Nathan Buckley.
The 35-year-old is the first new appointment for Collingwood's football staff since Buckley was reappointed.
The Magpies also made the surprise decision to sack high performance manager Bill Davoren.
Boyd will work in Collingwood's academy program with fellow coaches Tarkyn Lockyer and Brad Gotch.
He will also be a line coach for their VFL team under coach Jared Rivers.
The Magpies said in a statement that Boyd was the first of many upcoming new appointments to their football department staff.
"Matthew built his reputation as one of the competition's elite players through hard work, resilience and great leadership," said Collingwood football director Geoff Walsh.
"These are all qualities we want to impart on our younger players coming through.
"To have fought his way onto a rookie list and end up with close to 300 AFL games and a premiership shows a huge appetite for continued personal growth and development and we think those attributes will really strengthen our Academy program."
The former Bulldogs captain played 292 games and won three club best and fairests, as well as earning three All-Australian selections.
His appointment came a day after the Magpies re-signed American import Mason Cox on a three-year deal.
