CBA cuts regular season short

Feb 2, 2009 - 5:17 PM ALBANY, New York (Ticker) -- Citing economic problems, the Continental Basketball Association announced Monday that it will end its regular season Tuesday.

The CBA said it would then conduct a best-of-three series between the league's top two teams - the Albany Patroons and the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry - to determine its champion.

All three games will take place in Albany on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary.

"Due to the ever increasing problems with the economy, the CBA has decided to abbreviate the remainder of the regular season," CBA commissioner Dennis Truax said in a statement. "This is the best course of action for the CBA to take at this time. The economy has affected us all, and we are now directly seeing the fallout from that."

The CBA began the 2008-09 season with just five teams and was down to four when the Pittsburgh Xplosion folded. The other clubs in the league are the East Kentucky Miners and the Minot Skyrockets.

"We will be holding an owners meeting during the finals as we look to restructure the CBA and come back next season stronger than ever," Truax added.
