Richardson guides Als over Bombers
Aug 4, 2012 - 4:00 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Jamel Richardson caught his first two touchdowns of the 2012 CFL season Friday night as the Montreal Alouettes downed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 36-26, at Canad Inns Stadium.Richardson went the first five weeks without a major, but finished the game with four catches for 91 yards and two scores to help the Alouettes (3-3) snap a two-game skid.
Anthony Calvillo completed 17-of-29 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns, while Brandon Whitaker rushed for 115 yards and added six catches for 64 yards through the air.
Alex Brink continued to improve in just his third start of the season, connecting on 25-of-39 passes for 311 yards, two majors and no interceptions. Brink also added a one-yard touchdown run late in the fourth.
Chad Simpson rushed for 65 yards and hauled in three passes for 40 yards, but the Blue Bombers (1-5) lost to the Alouettes for the second time this season after dropping a 41-30 decision on July 6.
"Mind set is frustrating," said Blue Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice, whose team heads into their bye week. "Just take it one game at a time and climb back. Six of eight teams make it (to the playoffs), but you have to play better than we did tonight."
After a 59-yard single from Sean Whyte on their first possession, the Alouettes drove down the field on their second series before Calvillo found Richardson for an 11-yard major to give the Alouettes an 8-0 lead.
Whyte then added a 17-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to make it an 11-point game before Justin Palardy got the Blue Bombers on the board with a 33-yard field goal to make it an 11-3 contest.
Whyte then added a single on Montreal's next possession before his 32-yard field goal late in the second quarter sent the Alouettes into the locker room with a 15-3 lead.
Both defenses stood tall in the third, as neither team scored until Whyte's 19-yard field goal late in the stanza. Montreal then recovered the ensuing kickoff to regain possession, but settled for a 32-yarder from Whyte to make it a 21-3 contest.
Brink found Simpson for a 35-yard catch-and-run on the final play of the third before capping the drive early in the fourth with an 11-yard major to Corey Watson to bring Winnipeg within 21-10.
Montreal recorded a single on its next drive, and after a quick two-and-out from Winnipeg, Calvillo found Richardson wide open in the middle of the field for a 60-yard score.
Winnipeg didn't go quietly however, as Brink led the Blue Bombers down the field before his one-yard major run and subsequent two-point conversion pass to Chris Matthews made it a 29-18 game.
Calvillo then crushed any dreams of a comeback as he found Eric Deslauriers for a 71-yard catch to move Montreal down to the two-yard line before Victor Anderson scampered in to put the game away for good.
Brink found Clarence Denmark for a 13-yard major as time expired before finding Watson for the two-point conversion to account for the final margin.
