Blue Bombers down Alouettes
Oct 8, 2012 - 9:12 PM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Joey Elliott became the first Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback to win two games this season.Elliott threw three touchdown passes in the Blue Bombers' 27-22 upset win over the Montreal Alouettes on Monday.
The 26-year-old Purdue product tallied 335 yards through the air on 17-of-25 efficiency for Winnipeg (4-10), which has won twice over their last three games.
"Today our defense came up and made some big plays and we were able to score touchdowns instead of field goals," Elliott said.
Blue Bombers starting quarterback Buck Pierce sat out the game due to a concussion he sustained during a 29-10 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Sept. 29. Pierce has missed five game this year and 23-of-49 regular-season tilts due to various injuries during his three years with the team.
Elliott has recorded two wins in six starts, Pierce has a victory over five starts, although he's only finished two of them, and third-stringer Alex Brink registered the other win.
Chris Matthews caught six passes for 143 yards and a touchdown, while Terrence Edwards and Rory Kohlert also hauled in scores in the victory.
Anthony Calvillo completed 21-of-39 passes for 336 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Alouettes (8-6), who have lost back-to-back games.
"The last two weeks we've been fighting, but it's not enough," Calvillo said. "We're in first place ... but I feel like we have our backs against the wall. We have to get our act together."
Brandon London had nine receptions for 170 yards and a major in the setback.
The out-of-sync Montreal offense finally woke up with three minutes left in the game.
Trailing, 27-16, Calvillo capped off a 7-play, 69-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass to London. The two-point try was unsuccessful.
Following a Winnipeg punt, Montreal got the ball back with 1:30 left. Calvillo, though, was intercepted by Brandon Stewart to seal the win for Montreal.
Winnipeg took advantage of three Alouettes turnovers in the first half and led 17-13 at the break.
After both teams exchanged field goals, Elliott found Edwards for a 50-yard score late in the opening frame before Adrian McPherson countered with a 1- yard TD to tie the score.
Following Matthews' 36-yard TD reception, Sean Whyte booted through a 39-yard field goal for Montreal with seven seconds left in the half.
Both teams exchanged field goals again in the third, which preceded Elliott's 15-yard TD strike to Kolhert with 9:26 to go in the final stanza for an 11- point advantage.
