Blue Bombers down Alouettes
Jul 5, 2013 - 3:04 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Justin Glotz had a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a 19-11 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday.Buck Pierce went 19-for-31 with 257 yards and a touchdown while Cory Watson added six catches for 114 yards for the Blue Bombers (1-1), who dropped a 38-33 decision to Montreal in the season-opener.
"It's always hard to win back-to-back games," said Winnipeg head coach Tim Burke. "Psychologically it's more in favor of the team that lost in the first game, especially if they're equal teams. From a fans point of view, it was a boring game, but every win is big and this comes at a good time."
Anthony Calvillo was 16-for-28 with 135 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Alouettes (1-1), who got three catches for 31 yards and a score from S.J. Green.
"It was embarrassing, disgusting and there's a lot of other words to describe our play," said Calvillo. "What we did today, I have no explanation for it. We just have to play better."
Scooter Berry picked off a Pierce pass early in the first quarter to give Montreal the ball at the Winnipeg 20. Montreal had a 1st-and-goal at the 9- yard line, but was held and a 15-yard field goal from Sean Whyte gave the team a 3-0 lead with 8:22 left in the first.
The Blue Bombers drove on their next touch and got into field goal range, but Justin Palardy missed a 40-yard attempt and Noel Devine returned the ball to the Montreal 16.
Forced to punt after a set of downs, the Alouettes recovered the ball near midfield as Jovon Johnson fumbled the punt and Chip Cox recovered, but another set of downs saw them punt the ball again.
A 37-yard catch from Cory Watson allowed the Blue Bombers to get to their own 43, and the team methodically marched the ball down the field from there, capping the 12-play drive on a 4-yard touchdown run from Glotz for a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.
Winnipeg got a single later in the second quarter to take an 8-3 lead into halftime as Whyte missed a 47-yard field goal late in the half.
The third quarter saw little from either offense, but the Alouettes nearly took the lead on a fumble recovery from Kyries Hebert that saw him take the ball into the end zone. However, a review of the play determined that the ball was down near midfield and Montreal was only able to manage a single for an 8-4 game.
Winnipeg got the point back, though, just over three minutes into the fourth quarter on a single from Mike Renaud.
The Blue Bombers had the ball later in the frame near midfield, and a 47-yard catch from Rory Kohlert set up a 1-yard touchdown run from Glotz for a 16-4 lead with 6:03 to play.
Montreal finally found the end zone when Green caught a pass from Calvillo and took it into the end zone from 17 yards out to make it a 16-11 game, but it was with 2:10 to play.
The Als forced the Bombers to quickly punt, but Calvillo fumbled the ball on a sack, with Winnipeg recovering and sealing the win on a 27-yard field goal from Palardy.
