Mitchell leads Stampeders past Argonauts

Jul 13, 2014 - 1:50 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Bo Levi Mitchell completed 16-of-24 passes for 267 yards and a career-high four touchdowns to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 34-15 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre.

Mitchell has now won his first five CFL starts dating back to last season for Calgary (2-0). Anthony Parker caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Jeff Fuller also benefited from Mitchell's success with five receptions for 58 yards and two scores.

For Toronto (1-2), Ricky Ray had an impressive completion percentage (24- of-30) and threw for 264 yards, but he failed to score a touchdown and also lost a fumble. Chad Owens (79 yards) and Anthony Coombs (55 yards) both had seven receptions.

The contest started with the teams trading field goals on their respective opening drives, with Swayze Waters making a 44-yarder for the Argonauts and Rene Paredes knocking through a 36-yarder for the Stampeders.

Toronto drove deep into Calgary territory with under five minutes to play in the first quarter but had to settle for another field goal by Waters, this time from 21 yards out, to take a 6-3 lead.

The game's first touchdown came in the waning moments of the opening quarter, as Mitchell connected with Parker on a fly route for a 58-yard scoring strike to give Calgary the advantage.

The Stampeders went up 17-6 less than six minutes into the second quarter when Mitchell hooked up with Fuller on an eight-yard touchdown pass.

The Argos were knocking on the door late in the half but again stalled deep in Calgary territory, settling for an 11-yard field goal by Waters to cut their deficit to eight, 17-9, heading into halftime.

Mitchell picked up right where he left off in the second half. Less than four minutes into the third quarter, he found Fuller in the end zone once again for a 15-yard major, as the Stamps extended their lead to 24-9.

The Argos set themselves up in great scoring position again thanks to a 50- yard kickoff return by Curtis Steele and a 23-yard reception by Coombs, but they failed to get in the end zone yet again, leading to another short Waters' field goal (22 yards) with 8:02 to play in the third.

While Toronto kept settling for three, Calgary wasted no time adding another major. Less than three minutes later, Mitchell tossed a 13-yard score to Marquay McDaniel to pad the Stamps' lead.

Waters' busy night continued late in the third when he drilled a 51-yard field goal.

Calgary added one more score before it was all said and done, a 13-yard field goal off the foot of Paredes early in the fourth quarter.
