Edwards, Roberts help Blue Bombers rally, hold off Alouettes

Jan 9, 2008 - 5:13 PM MONTREAL (Ticker) -- Terrence Edwards and Charles Roberts did something for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers that Milt Stegall could not.

Edwards and Roberts scored fourth-quarter touchdowns and Kevin Glenn completed 21-of-24 attempts for 258 yards and a score as the Blue Bombers rallied for a 20-18 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday.

Winnipeg (2-1-1) had been held to three singles by Rob Pikula and a field goal by Troy Westwood over the first three quarters before Edwards and Roberts went to work.

With the Blue Bombers trailing, 12-6, in the final period, Edwards hauled in a pass over the middle from Glenn before racing away from a fallen defensive back just 36 seconds into the quarter for a 41-yard touchdown and 13-12 edge. Edwards had three catches for 56 yards.

After the defense held Montreal (1-3) four tries from inside the Blue Bombers' two-yard line, the offense used a rugged, time-consuming drive to increase their lead.

Roberts capped a 10-play, 109-yard trek with a 16-yard TD run in which he bounced off several defenders before slashing into the end zone with 5:31 left. Roberts, who finished with 95 yards on 16 carries, gained 44 yards on four rushes during the drive.

Anthony Calvillo, who was 33-of-38 for 354 yards and a score, completed a 10-play, 91-yard drive with a 30-yard TD strike to Ashland Davis with 1:46 remaining, drawing Montreal within 20-18.

However, on the two-point conversion attempt, Calvillo rolled out to his right but was sacked by defensive end Tom Canada on the 18-yard line, sealing the win for the Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg won despite another scoreless performance by Stegall. The 13-year veteran, who caught two passes for 45 yards, remains one touchdown shy of breaking the all-time league record for TDs, a mark he currently shares with George Reed and Mike Pringle.

With his 354-yard effort, Calvillo passed Ron Lancaster for third place on the all-time list with 50,541 yards.
