Toronto upends Hamilton in East semis
Nov 14, 2010 - 10:59 PM Hamilton, ON (Sports Network) - Noel Prefontaine connected on three field goals and Cleo Lemon threw for 134 yards and a touchdown to Spencer Watt as Toronto upended Hamilton, 16-13, in an East Division Semi-Final from Ivor Wynne Stadium.Lemon completed 22-of-29 passes and rushed for 29 yards for the Argos, who now face East Division champ Montreal at Olympic Stadium next Sunday. Byron Parker sewed up the victory by intercepting a Kevin Glenn pass with two seconds remaining.
"We came into their home and smacked them around," said Argonauts running back Cory Boyd. "We knew that we just had to man up and we have a never-say-die attitude. We played hard for all four quarters."
Glenn, who left the game briefly with a hyperextended left knee before returning, completed 24-of-35 passes for 314 yards and was picked off twice for the Ticats. Quinton Porter rushed for a TD in defeat.
"Right now we have a great team and it breaks my heart (to see the game end that way)," said Hamilton wideout Arland Bruce. "We have to as a team, and as myself as well, ask if we did enough to contribute today. We didn't win the turnover battle and didn't execute."
Watt's 12-yard TD reception less than two minutes into the third quarter gave the Argos a 10-6 edge, then Prefontaine was good from 12 yards out late in the period to give the visitors a seven-point lead.
Prefontaine's fourth field goal of the day, a 13-yarder, gave the Argonauts a 16-6 advantage early in the fourth quarter, but Porter's three-yard run with just under seven minutes remaining pulled Hamilton within 16-13.
The Ticats looked poised to take the lead in the final seconds, but Glenn's try near the end zone from the Argos' 41-yard line for Bruce was tipped and fell into Parker's hands to wrap up the win for Toronto.
Prefontaine's 32-yard field goal gave Toronto the edge and was the lone score of the opening quarter.
Sandro DeAngelis connected on a 23-yard attempt midway through the second to knot the game, 3-3, then converted an 18-yarder just prior to the end of the half to give the Ticats a three-point lead.
