Final
Cornish, Stampeders down Tiger-Cats
Aug 10, 2012 - 3:50 AM Hamilton, ON (Sports Network) - Jon Cornish ran for 170 yards and a touchdown on Thursday and the Calgary Stampeders defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 31-20.Facing his former team, Kevin Glenn completed 15-of-28 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions, while Cornish added 47 receiving yards for the Stampeders (3-3), who outscored Hamilton 14-0 in the fourth quarter.
"I've had a lot of frustration but the offensive line came out and pushed a lot of people around and made it very easy for me," said Cornish.
Henry Burris, part of the return in the offseason trade which sent Glenn to Calgary, threw for 267 yards with one touchdown and an interception in the loss.
Chevon Walker ran for 68 yards and a score and also caught a touchdown pass for the Tiger-Cats (3-3), who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.
"We didn't come out and play with any energy," said Burris. "We can't play like that and expect to win."
Hamilton led 20-17 entering the fourth quarter courtesy of Walker's 47-yard touchdown sprint. The running back broke through the line of scrimmage, cut to his left, and found the corner of the end zone as time ran out in the third quarter.
The Stampeders, though, dominated the final stanza.
They began the fourth with the ball and quickly reeled off a four-play, 58- yard drive, which was capped by Romby Bryant's eight-yard touchdown run.
A Hamilton three-and-out followed and Glenn took advantage, engineering a 62- yard drive to cap the scoring. He completed the march with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Nic Lewis, after Marquay McDaniel drew a pass interference call on Armando Murillo in the end zone.
The Tiger-Cats entered Thursday as the CFL's top-scoring team (32.4 ppg) and the Stampeders weren't far behind (31.0 ppg), but it wasn't until midway through the second quarter that these high-octane offenses began to heat up.
Hamilton struck first, as Burris found a wide-open Walker streaking into the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown strike.
The scoring drive lasted nine plays and spanned 64 yards, but Calgary tied the game with one play -- a 21-yard touchdown scamper by Cornish. The run was set up by Larry Taylor's 42-yard punt return.
Luca Congi gave the Tiger-Cats a 10-7 lead less than two minutes before the half with a 43-yard field goal, but Chris Williams fumbled a punt after Calgary's first series of the third quarter, leading to Rene Paredes' 25-yard boot.
Congi responded with another field goal -- a 22-yarder -- before the Stampeders executed a 69-yard march, capped by Bo Levi Mitchell's short touchdown plunge, for a 17-13 lead.
