Stamps rout Blue Bombers

Sep 15, 2012 - 7:09 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn threw for 298 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-23 passing as the Calgary Stampeders trounced the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 44-3, on Friday.

Jon Cornish carried the ball 15 times for 53 yards and two touchdowns, while LaMarcus Coker ran for 79 yards and a score on just five carries.

Nikolas Lewis had a big day through the air for the Stampeders (7-4), catching seven passes for 131 yards. Rob Cote and Johnny Forzani also caught touchdown passes in the Stamps' fourth consecutive win.

"It was just a big, all-around win from top to bottom," Glenn said.

Alex Brink threw for just 55 yards on 6-of-14 passing, while starter Joey Elliot connected on 5-of-8 through the air for 26 yards and an interception. Chad Simpson led the Winnipeg (2-9) rushing attack with 86 yards on 13 carries in the team's fourth straight defeat.

Calgary opened the scoring on its first possession of the game as the offense moved the ball down to the Winnipeg 26 and lined up for a field goal attempt. The snap on the play went to holder Bo Levi Mitchell, who flipped it to Cote cutting across the formation and he ran 26 yards for the score.

The Stamps increased their lead to 9-0 on Winnipeg's third possession of the game when punter Mike Renaud was brought down in the end zone on 3rd-and-14 for a safety.

Late in the second quarter, the Stamps extended their lead to a comfortable 17-0 margin. With 1st-and-10 from the 55, Glenn's pass intended for Cote was picked off by Henoc Muamba, but the call was overturned on a roughing the passer penalty to Jake Thomas.

The flag gave the ball back to the Stampeders on the Blue Bombers 40 and Cornish capped the 7-play, 72-yard drive with an 18-yard sprint to the end zone.

Calgary got the ball back on the Winnipeg 51 on its next possession following a 2-and-out and Rene Paredes booted a 35-yard field goal through for a 20-0 lead with 2:12 on the second quarter clock.

Cornish capped a dominant first half with a three-yard push to the end zone for his second score of the night and a 27-0 lead at the break.

The teams traded field goals in the third quarter, giving the Stamps a 30-3 advantage.

Forzani capped a quick 3-play, 60-yard scoring drive with a 35-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter, and the Stamps put the game away on their ensuing possession as Coker finished off a 3-play, 65-yard drive with a 52- yard touchdown run to account for the final margin.
