Eight turnovers cost Winnipeg against Stampeders
Oct 13, 2012 - 8:56 PM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn threw two touchdown passes to propel the Calgary Stampeders to a 32-21 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Canad Inns Stadium.Calgary (9-6) received a huge performance from its defensive unit, as the team forced eight turnovers in the contest. Glenn finished with 286 yards on 21-of-29 passing. Jon Cornish gained 87 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, but he also fumbled twice. Romby Bryant caught five passes for a team-best 89 yards while Marquay McDaniel and Nik Lewis each had touchdown receptions.
For Winnipeg (4-11), Joey Elliot completed 22-of-33 passes for 284 yards and threw four interceptions.
"I thought in the middle of the field he played well. I thought in the red zone he played poorly. The mistakes are obvious, they are interceptions." said Blue Bombers' head coach Tim Burke.
Chad Simpson gained 84 yards and scored twice on 14 carries. Terrence Edwards led all receivers with nine receptions and 143 yards while Chris Matthews caught seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.
After a fumble on a punt return gave Calgary great field position to start a drive, Cornish capped off a four-play, 12-yard drive with a three-yard run for a score just three minutes after kickoff. Calgary added three more points as Rene Paredes connected on a 26-yard field goal.
Calgary added another major as Glenn completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Lewis to make it 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Bombers finally ended the run as Simpson rushed eight yards for a score with just under 11 minutes left in the opening half. Calgary answered with a 12-play, 57-yard drive which was finished off by a 29-yard field goal by Paredes.
Winnipeg fired back with a three-play, 54-yard drive which Simpson ended with an 11-yard run into the end zone.
Calgary added a touchdown before the half as Glenn completed a 10-yard pass for a score to McDaniel with 1:21 remaining. McDaniel was originally ruled down at the one-yard line, however an official challenge overturned the decision. The Stampeders went into the break ahead, 26-14.
After a scoreless third period, Calgary added three more points as Paredes chipped in a 27-yard field goal at the 9:10 mark of the fourth quarter. After his fourth interception, Elliot was sent to the sidelines which put Alex Brink under center for the Blue Bombers. Brink completed 5-of-7 passes for 61 yards including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Matthews.
It was not enough to bring Winnipeg back however, and Paredes added a 26-yard field goal in the final minute to give his team the double-digit victory.
