Ray leads Argonauts past Stampeders in 100th Grey Cup

Nov 26, 2012 - 5:35 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Ricky Ray threw a pair of touchdown passes on Sunday night, helping the Toronto Argonauts beat the Calgary Stampeders, 35-22, in the 100th Grey Cup at Rogers Centre.

Ray completed 18-of-30 passes for 231 yards and an interception for the Argonauts, who captured their first Grey Cup since 2004. Ray is now a three- time Grey Cup champion.

Chad Kackert carried the ball 20 times for 133 yards and caught eight passes for 62 yards for Toronto, which defeated Edmonton and Montreal to reach the championship game. Kackert was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

"I consider myself somewhat of a wordsmith but I can't explain this right now," Kackert said. "I was sitting there watching the clock tick, it felt like an hour for that last minute to go away."

Kevin Glenn connected on 14-of-27 passes for 222 yards and an interception for the Stampeders, who fell to 1-2 against Toronto in Grey Cup games.

Ray was intercepted by Quincy Butler on the first play of the game. Calgary, though, failed to take advantage and went two-and-out on offense.

Unlike Calgary, the Argonauts scored points off a turnover. Jon Cornish fumbled the football on the Stampeders' next possession. Toronto took over at the Calgary 44-yard line. A 15-yard face mask penalty and a 12-yard Kackert run put the ball at the five. Ray then found Chad Owens in the slot for a touchdown with about six minutes left.

The Stampeders responded with a field goal. Larry Taylor took a wide receiver screen 42 yards down to the Toronto 28. Calgary settled for a 30-yard Rene Paredes field goal to cut the gap to 7-3.

The Argonauts, though, took advantage of another turnover early in the second stanza. Pacino Horne picked off Glenn and raced 25 yards the other way for a touchdown, making it 14-3.

"We didn't start well. We didn't take advantage of their turnover and they got two touchdowns on theirs," Stampeders coach John Hufnagel said.

Toronto tacked on three more points after Calgary went two-and-out. Jason Barnes' 62-yard catch set up Swayze Waters' 16-yard field goal.

Paredes made an 18-yard field goal later in the period to cut the gap to 17-6. Nikolas Lewis' 61-yard catch-and-run helped set up the field goal.

However, the Argonauts tacked on another touchdown before the half. Dontrelle Inman's 32-yard catch along the left sideline moved the ball to the 1-yard line. Two plays later, Jarious Jackson rolled to his right and hooked up with Inman, who walked into the end zone. The score, which occurred with about 30 seconds remaining, gave Toronto a 24-6 lead at the break.

The score was 27-9 after Paredes and Waters made field goals of 27 and 20 yards, respectively, in the third quarter. Calgary tacked on two more points at the end of the period, when Toronto punter Noel Prefontaine ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Paredes made a 19-yard field goal early in the fourth to cut the gap to 27-14.

Toronto, though, put the game away when Andre Durie caught a 7-yard TD pass to make it a 20-point contest.

Prefontaine's single rounded out the scoring for Toronto.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw a 12-yard TD pass to Maurice Price in the final seconds. A successful two-point conversion accounted for the final margin.

Toronto went 2-0 against Calgary in the regular season ... Toronto defensive lineman Adriano Belli was ejected in the third quarter ... The Argonauts finished the regular season with a 9-9 record ... Calgary, which last won the Grey Cup in 2008, beat Saskatchewan and British Columbia to reach the title game ... Toronto defensive end Ricky Foley was named the game's Most Valuable Canadian.
