Stamps down Alouettes

Jul 13, 2013 - 3:16 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Like he did for much of last season, Kevin Glenn turned in a strong fill-in start that led the Calgary Stampeders to victory.

Subbing for an injured Drew Tate, Glenn threw for 268 yards and a touchdown to back five Rene Paredes field goals as the Stampeders posted a 22-14 win over the reeling Montreal Alouettes at Molson Memorial Stadium.

Glenn, who guided Calgary to a Grey Cup appearance and won nine regular-season games in place of Tate in 2012, completed 22-of-28 attempts in a sharp effort with his teammate sidelined with a strained right elbow he sustained in the Stampeders' 36-21 loss at Saskatchewan last Friday.

"It feels good to be back in there," said the 34-year-old Glenn. "I've got some more good years, I guess, after doing something like that. It feels good to get back on the field and contribute."

Nic Lewis hauled in Glenn's touchdown pass and chipped in 81 yards on six catches, with Brad Sinopoli adding 81 yards on five grabs for Calgary (2-1).

The Stampeders' defense made a solid contribution as well, holding the Alouettes to 258 total yards and allowing just one touchdown -- a 19-yard strike from Anthony Calvillo to Brandon London on Montreal's opening drive.

Montreal (1-2) got its only other touchdown on a 38-yard return of a blocked punt by Ed Gainey in the fourth quarter. Calvillo finished with 205 yards on 22-of-36 passing with one interception in the Alouettes' second straight home defeat.

"We're devastated," said Calvillo afterward. "I just have to improve after our second straight home loss and lead this offense."

Glenn and the Calgary offense started off slowly, with the unit going two-and- out on its first two possessions before putting together three consecutive scoring drives to erase an early 7-0 deficit.

A pair of Glenn completions to Marquay McDaniel, along with a Montreal face mask penalty, got the Stampeders on the board via a seven-play, 40-yard march capped by Paredes' 20-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Glenn went 4- for-6 for 54 yards on Calgary's ensuing series, which also ended in three points when Paredes connected from 22 yards away just under five minutes into the second period.

After the Stampeders forced another Montreal punt, Glenn connected on three straight throws to move his team to the Alouettes' 21-yard line. A defensive pass interference call on Chip Cox a short time later created a 1st-and-goal, with Glenn finding Lewis on a 9-yard score that enabled Calgary to enter halftime owning a 13-7 lead.

The Calgary defense continued to hold its ground following the break, and Glenn engineered two more drives that ended in Paredes field goals in the third quarter to further the Stamps' margin.

Glenn's 42-yard hookup to Sinopoli down the right sideline set up a Paredes 18-yarder that gave Calgary a nine-point edge just over six minutes into the second half, while a 14-yard delivery to Lewis on 2nd-and-11 led to Paredes knocking home a 39-yard kick that put the Stampeders up 19-7 with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Montreal continued to sputter offensively, meanwhile, punting on 7-of-8 possessions that followed Calvillo's 19-yard touchdown strike to London midway through the first quarter. The other series over that span ended in Calvillo being picked off by Fred Bennett six seconds before the intermission.

'I knew our defense has our back, but we definitely can contribute more on offense," Calvillo said. "We just have to."

Gainey gave the Als some new life, however, by blocking Rob Maver's punt and racing untouched into the end zone after scooping up the loose ball to make it a five-point game with 3:33 to go.

Montreal failed to get a first down after getting the ball back around a minute later, though, and Calgary's Jon Cornish ran three times for 19 yards to put Paredes in position for his fifth field goal of the night -- a 39- yarder that all but sealed the win with 47 second showing.

The Alouettes appeared to have put their recent offensive struggles behind after Calvillo made good on 7-of-8 passes as Montreal advanced 86 yards in 11 plays on its initial drive of the night. Brandon Whitaker added a 21-yard run on the touchdown-producing sequence.

"Mind you it was an improvement," said Calvillo of the offense's performance compared to last week's loss to Winnipeg. "But losing by eight points, it obviously wasn't good enough."

Calvillo, the CFL's all-time leader in passing yards, reached the 79,000-yard mark with a six-yard completion to London on the last play of the third quarter ... Paredes has now made 25 consecutive field goals, the third-longest streak in league history ... Calvillo threw a touchdown pass for the 20th straight game, one shy of matching a personal best ... The Montreal defense recorded five sacks, including back-to-back takedowns of Glenn by Kyries Hebert in the fourth quarter.
