Burris and Tiger-Cats dump slumping Bombers

Aug 17, 2013 - 3:51 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Henry Burris completed 22-of-36 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 37-18 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday.

C.J. Gable rushed 10 times for 75 yards and a score and Dan LeFevour, Hamilton's short-yardage quarterback, rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown and also completed 2-of-3 passes for nine yards and a score for the Tiger-Cats (3-4), who have won their last two games.

The Blue Bombers (1-6) quarterback woes continued on Friday as they turned to Max Hall. In his CFL debut, the former Arizona Cardinals signal caller completed 18-of-30 passes for 241 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Hall was the third quarterback to start for Winnipeg this season.

Chad Simpson rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries, Terrence Edwards caught eight passes for 172 yards and Rory Kohlert caught five passes for 31 yards and a touchdown for the Bombers, who also made a pair of front office changes over the past week.

Winnipeg fired both general manager Joe Mack and CEO Garth Buchko following the team's slow start to the season.

The Tiger-Cats got on the board on their first possession of the game as Luca Congi connected on a 41-yarder to cap a seven-play drive.

After forcing a punt on the ensuring possession, Hamilton struck again and LeFevour found John Delahunt for a one-yard touchdown pass. Earlier in the drive, Burris found Gable of a 42-yard gain and a 17-yard pass interference call in the end zone put the ball on the one-yard line to set up the score.

Hall's first career touchdown came on the Bombers' first drive in the second half, a 101-yard march that lasted nearly seven minutes. After an illegal use of hands penalty on Hamilton gave Winnipeg the ball on the Ti- Cats' five yard-line, Hall connected with Kohlert in the end zone to pull the Bombers within three.

Hamilton extended its lead to 24-7 in the third quarter as LeFevour bulled his way across the goal line from one yard out. LeFevour was initially stuffed at the line, but managed to extended the ball into the end zone for the 17-point cushion.

The Blue Bombers picked up a single on Mike Renaud's 66-yard punt to open the fourth, then made it 24-11 when Sandro DeAngelis booted one through the uprights from yards out with just under 12 minutes to play.

Congi's 46-yarder four minutes later pushed the spread to 27-11 before Gable broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run.

Ian Wild returned Chad Simpson's fumble 65 yards to make it 34-18 and Congi buried a 27-yarder in the closing seconds to account for the final difference.

Game Notes

Hamilton wide receivers Samuel Giguere and Greg Ellingson finished with 85 and 76 receiving yards, respectively ... Gable also caught three passes for 72 yards, including a 42-yard catch-and-run ... Hall missed one series in the third quarter after taking a hard hit to his chest area. He was replaced by Buck Pierce, who started the season at quarterback. Pierce went 2-for-2 for nine yards in his only action ... The Blue Bombers have lost five straight.
