Cornish carries Calgary over Winnipeg

Oct 6, 2013 - 1:48 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jon Cornish rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns as the Calgary Stampeders rolled to a 38-11 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium.

Cornish, who entered the game second in the CFL in rushing yards, had 17 carries in the contest for Calgary (11-3) which holds a two-point lead over Saskatchewan and British Columbia for the top spot in the Western Division. Kevin Glenn threw for 320 yards and two scores on 21-of-29 passing for the Stampeders while Marquay McDaniel (five receptions, 123 yards, TD) and Joe West (eight receptions, 120 yards) each had big games.

Will Ford rushed for 156 yards on 1` carries and also had a kickoff return for a touchdown for Winnipeg (2-12), which has lost four-straight games. Max Hall completed only 15-of-34 pass attempts for 147 yards and an interception for the Bombers.

Rene Paredes put Calgary on the board after its first drive with a 35-yard field goal.

The Stampeders extended their lead to 10-0 quickly as Cornish ran for a 50- yard touchdown on the third play of the next drive.

A 70-yard rush from Ford on Winnipeg's next possession set up a 15-yard field goal from Sandro DeAngelis, which got the Bombers on the board for the first time.

Cornish would score again before the first quarter came to an end when he tallied a seven-yard touchdown run.

The second quarter was less eventful with each team recording a single before a 24-yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Maurice Price, with less than two minutes in the period, pushed Calgary even further ahead.

After halftime the Stampeders' lead continued to expand. First Paredes nailed a 14-yard field goal attempt early in the third quarter. Then, later in the period, Glenn threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to McDaniel.

The Bombers missed an opportunity to score following Paredes' field goal in the period as DeAngelis missed a 48-yard field goal attempt of his own. However Winnipeg would manage to put points on the board before the period's close as Ford returned the kickoff following McDaniel's touchdown reception 100 yards for a major.

Early on the in the fourth quarter the Stampeders got a 46-yard field goal from Paredes to conclude the scoring.
