Hall, Blue Bombers down Alouettes
Oct 14, 2013 - 9:34 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Hall threw for two touchdowns as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers avoided being eliminated from playoff contention with a 34-27 victory over the Montreal Alouettes at Molson Stadium.Hall completed 16-of-27 passes for 223 yards, while Will Ford caught a touchdown and also rushed for 93 yards and another score on the ground as Winnipeg (3-12) ended a four-game skid.
"It says a lot about our guys with our team moving forward. That long run by Will Ford of 69 yards really helped us. He's making big plays when need them. I'm not gonna lie it feels really good to win," said Hall.
Montreal (6-9) was plagued with turnovers as Josh Neiswander went 19-of-37 for 199 yards with three interceptions. Troy Smith also came in at quarterback throwing a touchdown and an interception. Tyrell Sutton ran for 35 yards and a touchdown as the Alouettes have lost two of their last three games.
"You can't win if you turn the ball over seven times. We missed clinching a playoff spot. Penalties at the wrong times hurt us. There is no excuse, we beat ourselves," said Montreal coach Jim Popp.
A Neiswander interception set up a 16-yard field goal by Sandro DeAngelis for Winnipeg early in the first quarter. After Sean Whyte fumbled a snap to turn the ball over, Hall found Ford a play later for a 17-yard touchdown to put Winnipeg up by 10.
Alex Suber dove in front of Arland Bruce to pick off Neiswander. Smith would come into the game to put Montreal on the board in the second quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass to S.J Green.
Neiswander connected with Duron Carter for a 40-yard completion before Sutton ran from a yard out to put Montreal in front late in the second quarter. Whyte hit a 19-yarder for Montreal before Hall launched a 40-yard bomb to Clarence Denmark nine seconds before the end of the first half to tie the game at 17.
Montreal appeared to fumble the ball near the goal line, but upon further review Jerome Messam's elbow was down. An 11-yard field goal from Whyte broke the tie early in the third quarter.
After another field goal from Whyte, Denmark hauled in another big catch, this time for 34 yards. A pass interference call set the Blue Bombers at Montreal's 1-yard line. Jason Boltus worked his way into the end zone for a touchdown to give Winnipeg a 24-20 edge.
Whyte knocked in two more field goals from 48 and 22 yards, respectively, to put the Alouettes back in the lead by two points.
Ford found a hole for a 69-yard burst to set up Winnipeg a yard shy of the end zone and two plays later, he broke through to put Winnipeg back up 31-26 with 8:02 left in the fourth quarter.
Whyte missed a 46-yard attempt that grazed the upright for a single before DeAngelis knocked through another field goal to extend Winnipeg's lead to 34-27 before Washington picked off Neiswander to end the game.
