Blue Bombers stun Tiger-Cats on last-second score

Aug 1, 2014 - 2:53 AM Hamilton, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers blew a 17-point lead, but they scored a touchdown on the last play of the game to beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats by a 27-26 margin on Thursday.

The Blue Bombers led 20-3 early in the third quarter before Hamilton stormed back with 23 unanswered points.

Trailing 26-20, Winnipeg took over with 1:40 to play. Faced with a 3rd-and-2 from the Hamilton 40, Drew Willy hooked up with Aaron Kelly for 16 yards. Two plays later, Julian Feoli-Gudino caught a 22-yard pass to the 2-yard line. Willy capped the game-winning drive with a 2-yard TD pass to Nic Grigsby. Lirim Hajrullahu made the extra point to give the Blue Bombers the one-point win.

"A lot of guys made big plays," Willy said. "We did the same thing against Montreal this year and I told the guys that in the huddle."

Willy completed 31-of-43 passes for 361 yards for Winnipeg, which is off to a 5-1 start for the first time since the 2011 season. Grigsby caught six passes for 63 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 56 yards and a score.

Dan LeFevour connected on 19-of-33 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Tiger-Cats (1-4). LeFevour also carried the ball five times for 15 yards and a score.

"It's not a lot of fun," Hamilton head coach Kent Austin said. "I would rather lose 47-0 than lose like that."

Hajrullahu connected on a 19-yard field goal to cap the opening drive of the game. Hajrullahu made a 25-yarder later in the first quarter.

The Tiger-Cats got on the board early in the second stanza when Justin Medlock made a 32-yard field goal.

Backup quarterback Robert Marve's 4-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter made it 13-3 Winnipeg.

The Blue Bombers went ahead 20-3 on Grigsby's 16-yard TD run early in the third period.

But the Tiger-Cats finally got going on offense. C.J. Gable caught a 48-yard TD pass to cut the gap to 20-10.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, LeFevour used his legs to score from two yards out. Hamilton's defense held strong before Quincy McDuffie, making his CFL debut, returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown to give the Tiger-Cats their first lead of the game.

Hamilton took a 26-20 lead following a safety.
