Glenn and Lions put the bite on RedBlacks

Oct 12, 2014 - 5:48 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Glenn threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns as the British Columbia Lions crushed the Ottawa RedBlacks, 41-3, at BC Place.

Glenn, who completed 20-of-27 in order to post his best efficiency rating (154.1) of the season, sought out Ernest Jackson who turned eight catches into 195 yards and a major for the Lions (8-7) as they snapped a three-game slide and kept their postseason hopes alive. In addition to almost 400 yards through the air, courtesy of Glenn and John Beck, the Lions also pitched in with 170 yards and two scores on the ground in the rout.

The RedBlacks (2-12), who were aiming for back-to-back wins for the first time this season, their inaugural campaign in the CFL, generated just 204 yards of offense and were held to single digits in the scoring column for the third time in five games and the fifth time in 2014 overall.

Ottawa quarterback Henry Burris completed only 12-of-21 for 143 yards before giving way to Danny O'Brien once the outcome had been decided. O'Brien converted only 2-of-7 for another 15 yards and was intercepted once.

On the very first defensive series for the Lions, linebacker Solomon Elimimian tied the club record for tackles in a single season with 115, as the hosts forced Ottawa to eventually punt. Elimimian finished with seven stops on the night, giving him 121 on the campaign.

Less than three minutes into the contest, Glenn suffered what appeared to be an injury to his hand, requiring the Lions to call on Beck. The BYU product stepped in and completed his first two passes, but the drive was then met with several missed opportunities, requiring kicker Paul McCallum to come on and convert a 30-yard field goal for the first points of the night.

Glenn returned to the field shortly thereafter, eventually taking the Lions down the field in the second quarter, thanks in part to some damaging penalties by the RedBlacks. With the ball just outside the end zone, Burris handed off to Shawn Gore who broke the plane of the goal line midway through the period.

With 3:47 remaining in the first half, the RedBlacks finally broke through on the scoreboard as Brett Maher knocked through a 34-yard field goal to cut the deficit to seven.

Unfortunately for Ottawa, Glenn and the Lions were more than ready to counter as the signal caller lofted a pass down the left side to Jackson at the 32- yard line and he did the rest by fighting off a defender and making it into the end zone for a 60-yard major and a 17-3 advantage at the break.

Glenn opened the third quarter a perfect 7-of-7 through the air, with three of those completions going to Lavasier Tuinei. The last of his three straight catches went for a nine-yard major. For Tuinei, it was his first career CFL TD.

It appeared as though Glenn and the Lions were again preparing to tally another major, but a stalled drive deep in Ottawa's end brought McCallum on for a 30-yard field goal, making the score 27-3. A three-yard TD pass from Glenn to Keola Antolin finished off an eight-play, 96-yard drive in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 34-3. Antolin ran for a game-high 157 yards in just his second CFL contest.

After a wayward snap on a potential Ottawa punt gave the Lions a short field to work with, a penalty in the end zone allowed Beck to register a one-yard TD run at the 2:54 mark.

A member of the Lions for the third time in his career, McCallum played in Ottawa in 1993 when the city sported the Rough Riders of the CFL. With 11 points on the night, McCallum has now produced 2,999 points in his career, surpassing Mark McLoughlin (2,994 points) for second on the all-time CFL scoring list.

With the victory, BC's advantage in the all-time series was extended to 41-18-2, with the Lions winning 11 in a row against a team representing the city of Ottawa.
