Blue Bombers fall to Stampeders, clinch playoff spot
Oct 19, 2008 - 6:26 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers won even though they lost to the Calgary Stampeders, 37-16, on Saturday. The Bombers clinched a playoff spot by virtue of the Toronto Argonauts' loss to the Montreal Alouettes earlier in the day. Winnipeg (6-10) has locked up second place in the East division and will play host to a semifinal on November 8.
On the field, the Blue Bombers weren't as fortunate as Henry Burris directed Calgary to a 21-3 lead in the first half and the Stampeders (11-5) cruised to victory.
Burris, who was 28-of-36 for 337 yards and five touchdowns, connected with Brett Ralph with an 8-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring.
After a Winnipeg field goal, Burris found Jermaine Copeland from 36 yards and Ken-Yon Rambo from 33 to open up the 18-point advantage.
Winnipeg replaced starting quarterback Kevin Glenn with Ryan Dinwiddie in the third quarter. The former Boise State standout found Romby Bryant for a 7-yard score to cut the deficit to 23-13.
Burris came right back and hit Teyo Johnson with a 5-yard pass to give Calgary a 30-13 advantage and put the game out of reach.
Alexis Serna had three field goals for Winnipeg.
