NZ uninterested in hosting 2022 Com Games
Mar 15, 2017 - 1:01 AM The New Zealand government has ruled out hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban was stripped of the rights on Monday. The Commonwealth Games Federation said it was seeking a new host because the South African city had failed to deliver on promises included in its bid, including on governance, venues, funding and risk management.
Following the announcement, Kiwi sports and recreation minister Jonathan Coleman said his government had no intention to make a hosting bid.
"There is a lot of infrastructure that needs to be built across the country and this ranks well down on our list of priorities," Coleman said.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff had also earlier confirmed the City of Sails would not put its hand up for the tournament.
On Tuesday, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate ruled out the city backing up for the 2022 event after hosting the 2018 Games.
English cities Birmingham and Liverpool are the early favourites to host the event.
