Five golds for Australia at Youth Games

Jul 24, 2017 - 1:09 AM Rising sprint sensation Riley Day has won the girls' 200m as Australia bagged a further five gold medals on the final day of the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.

The 17-year-old Queenslander clocked a winning time of 23.42 seconds, with countrywoman Ella Connolly claiming the bronze.

Day and Connolly then returned to the track to win another title in the mixed 4x100m relay with Jake Doran and Ben Schmidtchen.

They clocked a winning time of 43.19, relegating Jamaica to the silver-medal position.

It completed a memorable meet for Day, who had also won silver in the individual 100m.

Australia's other track and field gold medals on Sunday came from Neil Janse in the boys' javelin (74.19m) and Bendere Oboya, Carley Thomas, Sebastien Moir and Jordan Doris in the mixed 4x100m relay.

Australian boxer Ella Boot claimed gold in the girls' 60kg division in a split decision, while Josh Fitzpatrick (56kg) and Jake Clague (60kg) both pocketed silver medals.

Cyclist Madeleine Fasnacht was a close third in the girls' road race.

Fasnacht, who won gold in the time trial earlier in the Games, was given the honour of carrying the Australian flag at the closing ceremony.
