CA yet to consider next chief selector
Oct 19, 2016 - 6:01 PM Speculation over Cricket Australia's next chairman of selectors is set to continue throughout summer, with Pat Howard unlikely to contact candidates for some time.It was revealed last week that Rod Marsh will step down from the key post when his contract expires next year, with settling on the squad for a four-Test tour of India set to be his final big assignment.
That news has predictably prompted plenty of discussion.
Current selectors Mark Waugh and Trevor Hohns plus former players Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie have all either thrown their hat in the ring or been publicly backed to take the pressure-laden job.
"I'm going to let the speculation go. Rod Marsh's contract is up on the 30th of June, 2017 so that's a long time away," Cricket Australia high-performance manager Howard said.
"I won't be talking to anyone for a while.
"I want to focus on the summer. We've all got a job to do and we'll let the summer play out in that regard."
There is also the prospect of adding two new members to the selection panel following Marsh's exit.
The current group can only attend so much cricket. If there are three Sheffield Shield games running at the same time as an international match it means one of the Shield clashes won't be watched by a selector.
"One of the big things the selectors have always said and the chairman of selectors, the last couple, have been saying is players must be able to see a selector at each game," coach Darren Lehmann said.
"With the schedule the way it is, it's tough currently.
"So whether they extend it (the panel) or not ... that's up to Cricket Australia."
Lehmann, who also sits on the selection panel, was full of praise for Marsh's contribution to Australian cricket over the past two years.
"Rod's been fantastic, for not only myself as coach but also the playing group and the way he has the honest conversations with them," Lehmann said.
"So whoever steps into the role I'm sure will do a good job as well but we're certain;y going to miss someone of Rod's stature."
