Nevill wants his bat to do the talking
Dec 2, 2016 - 5:52 AM Dumped Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill says he doesn't deserve to be in the Australian team but insists lack of runs rather than chat had brought about his downfall.Nevill was dropped after the second Test against South Africa and replaced by Matthew Wade.
The NSW gloveman responded in his next innings with an unbeaten 179 in a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania.
Nevill averages 39 at Shield level, but just 22 in Test matches.
He scored a gritty unbeaten 60 in just under four hours in the first Test in Perth, but scores of three and six in Hobart sealed his fate.
"I think it's pretty simple - I got dropped because I wasn't making enough runs," Nevill said on Friday at the SCG.
He had no issues with his axing and offered no excuses.
"I certainly can't say I deserve to be in the Australian team because I think my performances haven't been good enough to stay in the Australian team - that's pretty evident," Nevill said.
Some have suggested Nevill was also dropped because he wasn't yappy enough behind the stumps, but the NSW custodian wasn't buying into that theory.
"I think it boils down to not making enough runs, I reckon," Nevill said.
"If you are playing well and winning cricket games, I don't think things like that really come into it too much."
Asked if he would change his style, Nevill said "I'm not going to make a change in that aspect - I'll let my bat do the talking".
It spoke volumes against Tasmania, but Nevill said he hadn't gone out with the mindset to prove a point to the selectors.
