Voges-mentored Malan posts maiden Test ton
Dec 14, 2017 - 10:58 AM Dawid Malan, the batsman who benefited from Adam Voges' mentorship at Middlesex, has produced England's first Test ton in Australia since 2013.Malan celebrated a maiden century in his eighth Test, reaching three figures late on day one of the Ashes clash at Voges' home deck with a powerful pulled boundary.
"It was so emotional," he said.
"I didn't really know what to do after I got the hundred.
"I always think you lie in your bed at night sometimes thinking about scoring a hundred ... you always play it through your head.
The left-hander was dropped on 92 by Cameron Bancroft at third slip, while David Warner missed a chance to run him out on 32.
"I got a bit ahead of myself (when he edged the ball to Bancroft). I was thinking I'm two or three shots away from scoring a ton," Malan said.
"I premeditated that shot a little bit.
"Thankfully today, it was my day and I had a few things go my way."
Apart from the two chances, it was exactly the sort of innings coach Trevor Bayliss would have dreamed of as his side attempted to fight back at the WACA after losing the first two Tests.
Malan kept the scoreboard ticking over, left well and wasn't afraid to play his shots. An exquisite cover drive off Josh Hazlewood was the highlight of his 16 boundaries.
The 30-year-old batsman is a late bloomer who made his international debut earlier this year and drew inspiration from Middlesex captain Voges.
Voges waited until 2015 to don the baggy green, when he became the oldest player in Test history to score a hundred on debut at age 35.
"I caught up with him when they played the first tour game against WA," Voges told AAP last month.
"We didn't talk a lot about cricket. It was more to say g'day.
"He's got a big tour coming up ... his contribution could play a huge role. I've spoken to him a little bit about local conditions and what to expect."
Voges also admitted he'd send a quick note to Australian coach Darren Lehmann with a few thoughts about some plans for Malan.
