Reds cut veteran Maholm
Mar 30, 2015 - 8:16 PM Goodyear, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds released pitcher Paul Maholm among a series of roster cuts the team announced Monday.Maholm, attempting to make the Reds as a non-roster invitee, went 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA over five appearances this spring. The 32-year-old lefty posted a 1-5 record with a 4.84 ERA in 30 games (eight starts) with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
The Reds also optioned reliever Pedro Villarreal to Triple-A Louisville and assigned four others -- pitcher Nate Adock, catcher Kyle Skipworth and infielders Ivan De Jesus and Irving Falu -- to minor league camp.
Villarreal recorded a 4.30 ERA in 12 games out of the bullpen for Cincinnati last season, but the right-hander was tagged for 11 runs and 15 hits over eight Cactus League innings.
