Lester sharp as Red Sox fall to Pirates

Feb 26, 2009 - 9:20 PM FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) -- Jon Lester pitched two scoreless innings Thursday as the Boston Red Sox dropped a 3-2 Grapefruit League decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The lefthander, who rebounded from a bout with cancer to post a solid 16-6 record with a 3.21 ERA last year, allowed two hits and struck out one in his first outing of the spring.

Jeff Bailey paced Boston's offense with a two-run single in the first inning off Pirates starter Ian Snell.

Snell struck out three in his two innings, allowing just those two runs.

Pedro Alvarez, drafted second overall by the Pirates last season, had an RBI double in his lone at-bat.
