Uggla leads Marlins past Diamondbacks

May 21, 2009 - 1:39 AM MIAMI(AP) -- Rocked by news that pitcher Scott Schoeneweis' wife was found dead in Arizona, the somber Diamondbacks had a difficult time concentrating on baseball.

"I was told about 30 minutes before I was about to go out," Arizona starter Doug Davis said after the Diamondbacks' 8-6 loss to Florida on Wednesday night in the first game of a doubleheader. "Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with him. It is a tough time for not just him, but all of us and his family. It's tragic."

In Arizona, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said deputies found 39-year-old Gabrielle Dawn Schoeneweis' body on the floor of the master bedroom in the family's home shortly after noon Wednesday.

"His world was just rocked," Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch said. "He and his kids, his family, his extended family, his in-laws, everybody's lives are changed forever. He took it as expected, very hard."

The relief pitcher returned to Arizona.

"We got him to the airport, got him on a flight, and he's back with his family," Hinch said.

Dan Uggla homered and drove in four runs for Florida, and Jorge Cantu, Cody Ross and Wes Helms also had RBIs in the Marlins' second victory in their last nine games. Chris Volstad (3-3) struck out a career-high nine and won for the first time since April 14. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed four runs and five hits in six innings.

"I had all my stuff working," Volstad said. "It was just a matter of getting ahead in the count and finishing it off. I just thought I pitched pretty well."

The Marlins opened the scoring in the first inning when Emilio Bonifacio scored on Cantu's groundout. Bonifacio and Jeremy Hermida both singled to start the inning and advanced on a double steal. Hermida came home on Ross' double to make it 2-0.

In the third. Uggla drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Volstad retired 11 straight at one point until Mark Reynolds drew a walk to lead off the fifth. Chad Tracy drove him in with a single, and Chris Snyder tied it at 3 with a two-run homer to left.

Davis struggled with his command and was pulled in the fifth with the bases loaded. Jon Rauch came on in relief and promptly threw a wild pitch allowing Hanley Ramirez to score. Rauch also gave up a three-run homer to Uggla, his fifth of the season, off of the left-field foul pole that made it 7-3.

"Obviously the Uggla homer was tough to bounce back from, but we did a good job and battled back and had opportunities," Hinch said. "I'm proud of this group to stick in it until the end."

Dan Meyer relieved Volstad and gave up a solo shot to Tracy and an RBI single to Gerardo Parra as Arizona pulled to 7-6. Kiko Calero, Leo Nunez, and Matt Lindstrom combined to hold off the Diamondbacks in the final 2 2-3 innings. Lindstrom picked up his eighth save after Helms drove in an insurance run in the eighth.

"You always want to win that first game," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Whatever it takes to get the 'W.' You want to go back out there and build on the things you did well and hopefully keep it going."

Davis (2-6) allowed four runs in 4 1-3 innings. He gave up six hits and five walks and struck out four.

"I feel for Scott and we will pray for him," Davis said. "I fought myself more than I fought the Marlins."

Notes: Uggla was hitting .150 (6-for-40) against lefties before his homer off of Rauch. ... Volstad was robbed of a base hit in the second inning when he hit a sharp line drive back at Davis, who managed to get his glove on the ball without looking and deflected it right to Tracy standing at first base. ... Reynolds stole a career-high four bases.
