Reynolds, LaRoche homer for DBacks in win

Apr 24, 2010 - 5:29 AM PHOENIX(AP) -- From what Arizona Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch saw on television Friday night, his team played one of their few complete games against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mark Reynolds and Adam LaRoche hit consecutive homers during a five-run fourth inning and the Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 7-4.

Kelly Johnson added solo shots in the fifth and seventh innings and Chris Snyder also connected in the fourth for the Diamondbacks, who won for the second time in three games.

"I got to watch it on TV but it looked like the guys got their pitches and didn't miss it," Hinch said. "We have the ability. The consistency is what we're battling within ourselves."

Hinch was watching from his office in the aftermath of an unusual play in the top of the fourth.

Jayson Werth hit a towering fly ball to the right-center field corner that Chris Young appeared to catch, only to fumble the ball to the ground as he attempted to pull it out of his glove. Werth, who was between first and second when Young dropped the ball, raced home to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

Young was charged with a four-base error, his first error since August 9.

Hinch argued with crew chief Dale Scott for several minutes before he was ejected and another couple of minutes after.

"I thought he caught it," Hinch said. "I saw what I thought was a change in direction. A change in direction of the ball like that indicates control. He didn't see it that way. We had a disagreement."

Young didn't react when the ball fell, leaving right fielder Justin Upton to throw the ball in, adding to Hinch's certainty.

"I don't know if I want to get into it," Young said. "I thought I caught it. He came out there 80 feet or so and he used his best judgment and the call was the call."

Kris Benson threw six-plus strong innings for the Diamondbacks, who won for the second time in three games.

Benson (1-1) allowed the three runstwo earnedon eight hits with five strikeouts for his first win since April 15, 2009 with the Texas Rangers, a span of seven starts. Chad Qualls recorded an out for his third save in five chances.

"Snyder and I had a good game plan going into the game like last time and I executed the pitches," Benson said. "That five spot is nice for anybody so I definitely welcomed that."

Shane Victorino was 2 for 5 with a triple and an RBI single for the Phillies.

Reynolds and LaRoche helped the Diamondabcks rally against Cole Hamels (2-2).

Upton singled with one out and Reynolds hit his team-best sixth home run a half-dozen rows into the left-field stands to tie it. LaRoche followed with his first Diamondbacks home run. Snyder had a two-run, two-out shot over the left-field bullpen to make it 5-2.

Johnson led off the fifth with his fourth home run just over the left-field fence to give Arizona a 6-2 lead.

"The first couple of innings he had a good angle and he was popping the ball low," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "All of a sudden he started getting everything up and made some mistakes."

Hamels allowed six runs on eight hits over six innings with a walk and seven strikeouts.

"They can hit the fastball," Hamels said. " I just have to be more aware of that and put myself in situation to be able to have a better angle where they're not necessarily hitting them in the air. Because every time they hit it in the air they hit it out."

Brian Schneider singled leading off the seventh against Benson and scored on Placido Polanco's grounder to third off Leo Rosales to cut the Diamondbacks lead to 6-3.

"Rosales came in and cleaned up my mess and that was a big part of the game," Benson said.

Johnson added his second home run, a lined shot just to the right of the Phillies' bullpen in right field off J.C. Romero, to make it 7-3.

"I don't think I've ever gotten a hit off either of those guys," Johnson said. "I don't know what the stat sheet says but it can't be good. It works out that way sometimes."

Hamels hit a one-out double and Victorino tripled to the center-field wall to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the third.

NOTES: Arizona's five home runs were one short of the franchise mark and were the team's most since hitting five on April 6, 2009, against Colorado. Johnson has two two-homer games this season and six in his career. The Diamondbacks' three-homer fourth was their second of the season and 17th in franchise history. Hinch's ejection was the fourth of his career. Phillies RHP Joe Blanton started for Double-A Reading Friday in his second rehab assignment, allowing four hits and one walk over three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Closer Brad Lidge, making his seventh rehab appearance, came on in relief of Blanton and allowed one hit and one walk in an inning. Blanton is on the disabled list with a strained left oblique while Lidge is recovering from surgery on his right elbow.
