Reynolds leads Diamondbacks past Phillies 8-6

Apr 26, 2010 - 1:23 AM By MATT PAULSON AP Sports Writer

PHOENIX(AP) -- Mark Reynolds and the Arizona Diamondbacks finally won a close one against a tough team.

Reynolds hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning and finished with three hits, including a three-run homer, helping the Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6 on Sunday.

"We played a complete game, and that's good to see out of us especially when we've ruined a couple of opportunities in these first couple of weeks to feel better about ourselves," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We're only a couple of weeks into this thing, and it feels like it's been a little longer just on how we've lost."

Arizona entered losers of seven of nine. Four of those defeats were by two runs or less, including Saturday's 3-2 loss on Jayson Werth's homer in the ninth inning.

But the Diamondbacks' offense came through in this one, matching a season high with 15 hits, also the most allowed by the Phillies this year. Arizona scored three runs in its final two at-bats to win for the first time this season when trailing after six innings.

Reynolds had a season-high four RBIs and Chris Young added three hits, including two doubles.

Arizona took two of three against Philadelphia after losing three straight sets. The two-time defending National League champions lost a road series for the first time this season after winning their first three.

"They've been great on the road. ... Their list of credentials goes on and on and on," Arizona second baseman Kelly Johnson said. "We needed to take two of three, and we needed to get going like that in the right direction."

Reynolds' clutch hit came off David Herndon (0-1), and Johnson picked up his fourth homer of the series. Leo Rosales (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory, and Chad Qualls worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save in six attempts.

Greg Dobbs hit a two-run homer and Carlos Ruiz drove in two runs for the Phillies.

Stephen Drew led off the Arizona eighth with a single to right and was thrown out by shortstop Wilson Valdez when he tried to score on Cole Gillespie's double down the left-field line.

Reynolds then hit a line drive that bounced just in front of the wall in right. After Adam LaRoche was walked intentionally, Young tacked on an RBI single to make it 8-6.

Arizona rallied after starter Rodrigo Lopez surrendered six runs and 10 hits over six innings. John Hester tied it at 6 with an RBI double in the seventh.

"The game was sitting right there for us, but they did it when they had to," Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said. "We didn't do it when we had to."

Kyle Kendrick allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings for Philadelphia. It was his fourth no-decision in four starts this year.

The Phillies scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead for the second time in the game. Chase Utley scored on Werth's sacrifice fly and Ruiz's two-run single made it 6-5.

Arizona erased a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the fifth. Johnson hit a two-run drive for his seventh homer and Reynolds connected for his seventh, leaving them tied for the team lead.

"I just didn't make the adjustments in the fifth inning," Kendrick said.

Johnson has one fewer home run than he had in 106 games with Atlanta last season.

"I don't think about them," he said. "I won't think about them. I think about them as much as I think about the strikeout. Once it happens I'm on to the next one. I'm just going to try and keep that going and hope they keep flying out."

Dobbs sent the sixth pitch of the game into the right-field stands for his first homer since July 6.

Arizona star Justin Upton fouled a ball off his left shin in the fifth inning. He remained in the game after drawing a walk but was replaced by Gillespie in right field in the top of the sixth. Upton said he hopes to be able to play Monday at Colorado.

NOTES: Diamondbacks C Chris Snyder, who didn't play Sunday, has gone 209 games without an error, the third-longest streak by a catcher in major league history. Mike Matheny set the record of 252 with St. Louis from Aug. 2, 2002-Aug. 1, 2004. ... Every starting position player for the Phillies had at least one hit. ... The first 14 runs the Diamondbacks scored in the series came on home runs.
