Arrieta pitches Orioles past Giants.

Jun 16, 2010 - 5:54 AM SAN FRANCISCO(AP) -- Jake Arrieta may not be the most famous rookie who has won his first two major league starts, and that's just fine with him. He's helping to turn some heads in an otherwise woeful season.

Arrieta gave up three hits over seven-plus innings, Adam Jones hit a home run and the Baltimore Orioles ended a four-game losing streak, beating the San Francisco Giants 4-1 Tuesday night.

"He's a one-of-a-kind arm," Arrieta said of Washington's Stephen Strasburg, his United States Olympic teammate. "He's a great pitcher, a great guy. I don't mind flying under the radar. I'm still going to go out there to do everything I can to be just as good if not better than him and he knows that. He knows I'm a competitor. ... He'll live up to the hype and I'll do my job too."

Ty Wigginton drove in two runs and Miguel Tejada had three hits as the Orioles ended a six-game losing streak in interleague play. Nick Markakis doubled twice and Corey Patterson had two hits and scored twice.

Arrieta (2-0) retired eight of the first nine hitters he faced with the lone hit being Pablo Sandoval's leadoff home run in the third. No other runner got past first base against the 24-year-old right-hander.

"He was working ahead of the hitters and challenging those guys," Orioles' manager Juan Samuel said. "He knows he's got good enough stuff to pitch here and he showed that tonight. He was on top of his game."

Joe Martinez (0-1), making his first start of the season, allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings for the Giants, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

"I was a little out of synch not having pitched for 10 days," Martinez said. "But it was good enough to get a lot of ground balls that just found holes."

Martinez, who appeared in nine games last year, was impressed by his counterpart.

"He made me look bad a couple of times," Martinez said. "He pitched well, kept it down and mixed it up effectively."

Patterson, who had his third consecutive multi-hit game, and Tejada singled to open the first with Wigginton's groundout scoring Patterson.

In the third, Tejada singled and Markakis doubled before Wigginton's grounder drove in Tejada.

Jones, who has hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games, led off the fourth with his eighth home run of the season. The Orioles added a run in the fifth when Wigginton grounded into a double play.

"I've always said that if we keep these games close I'm confident we can win," Samuel said.

Arrieta never allowed more than one runner in any inning, retiring the side in order four times.

"I feel like I just want to go out there and compete," Arrieta said. "Even when I don't have my best stuff, like tonight, I'm able to throw my pitches with conviction."

Former starter David Hernandez pitched the ninth to record his second career save, both in games started by Arrieta.

NOTES: Orioles INF Brian Roberts (strained abdominal muscle) is within two weeks from beginning baseball activities and could return to the lineup in 4 to 6 weeks. ... O's LHP Michael Gonzalez (strained left shoulder) and OF Felix Pie (upper back muscle strain) will participate in a simulated game on Wednesday. ... Giants SS Edgar Renteria (right groin strain) will join the team Wednesday although "it's not for certain" he'll be activated from the disabled list according to manager Bruce Bochy. ... Giants INF Mark DeRosa underwent further testing on his injured left wrist. Results were not immediately available. "We'll definitely have some news Wednesday," Bochy said. ... Tejada has gone 170 at-bats since his last home run, his second-longest such drought. ... Sandoval is hitting .415 (17-for-41) with five home runs when leading off an inning.
