Miley helps D'Backs to doubleheader sweep of Marlins
Aug 23, 2012 - 5:03 AMVideo
Miley (14-8) scattered four hits, issued just one walk, and struck out five -- including the final three batters he faced. The 25-year-old rookie tied a career-high in innings and pitches (116).
"He threw his pitches with a ton of conviction," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.
Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Diamondbacks, who swept the twinbill to force a split of the four-game series.
In Wednesday's opener, Tyler Skaggs picked up his first major league victory and Gerardo Parra collected two hits and scored twice en route to a 3-2 triumph.
Wade LeBlanc (2-3) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over seven innings to take the loss in the nightcap. He walked three and struck out four.
"They found holes when they needed to and put up just enough runs," LeBlanc said.
Jose Reyes had a pair of hits for the Marlins, who had won four of five entering the doubleheader.
Miami's most significant threat came in the seventh, when Donovan Solano and Reyes led off with consecutive singles. But Miley, whose 14 wins are the most by a NL rookie pitcher since 2005, recorded three straight outs to escape.
J.J. Putz worked around Greg Dobbs' one-out double in the ninth to record his 26th save of the season.. He became the first Diamondbacks pitcher in history to record two saves in one day.
Goldschmidt had an RBI single in the first inning, then doubled and scored during a two-run fourth.
A.J. Pollock led off the opening frame with a base hit and moved up on a bunt by Parra and a groundout by Aaron Hill before Goldschmidt slapped a single to right.
Hill began the fourth with a walk, Goldschmidt followed with a two-bagger to center and Chris Johnson blooped an RBI single to shallow right.
Goldschmidt advanced to third base on the play and crossed the plate on a passed ball by Rob Brantly.
