Pacheco leads Rockies past Braves
Sep 5, 2012 - 7:02 AMVideo
The red-hot Pacheco extended his hitting streak to 13 games as the Rockies blanked the Atlanta Braves, 6-0, in the second test of a four-game set.
Pacheco tallied two hits, including a solo homer, and two RBI. He currently holds the longest active hitting streak in the National League and is batting .367 (18-for-49) with two long balls, eight RBI and nine runs scored during the torrid stretch.
Carlos Torres (4-1) replaced starter Drew Pomeranz in the fourth inning and scattered three hits over three shutout frames for Colorado, which defeated Atlanta for the first time in five tries this season.
Tommy Hanson (12-8) allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts for the Braves, who have dropped four of their last six games.
"He was in good fastball command and threw both breaking balls over," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I thought he did a nice job."
Carlos Gonzalez cracked a one-out solo shot deep into the seats in right- center field in the fourth and Pacheco smacked a leadoff blast to left field in the fifth for a 2-0 Rockies advantage.
"Offensively, Cargo (Gonzalez) got us going. I don't know if you can hit a baseball harder than that, and Pacheco's home run was big to get us a couple of runs," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said.
The Rockies added to their lead after plating a pair in the seventh and eighth innings.
D.J. LeMahieu reached with one out in the seventh following Freddie Freeman's fielding error and moved to second on a Peter Moylan wild pitch. After Torres walked, Luis Avilan replaced Moylan on the mound and served up a single to Fowler, which plated LaMahieu before Torres scampered home on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, RBI singles by Pacheco and LaMehieu gave the Rockies a six-run lead.
The Braves tallied nine hits, but were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
"We hit a lot of balls hard," Braves catcher David Ross said.
Game Notes
The Rockies were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven ... Gonzalez's homer was his 22nd of the year ... Dustin Pedroia's 15-game hitting streak is the longest active streak in the majors.
