Orioles top Rays

May 13, 2012 - 4:35 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Adam Jones drove in two runs, Bill Hall belted a solo homer in his Baltimore debut and the Orioles posted a 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the second portion of a three-game set at Camden Yards.

Hall had his contract purchased from Triple-A Norfolk before the game after the Orioles placed third baseman Mark Reynolds on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. The veteran utility player started in left field and his eighth-inning blast provided insurance for his new team.

Brian Matusz (2-4) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win, the third in four games for Baltimore.

"We're playing our own division right now so these are games that are really, really important, especially early in the season," said Jones.

Jim Johnson earned his 11th save of the season with a flawless ninth.

Luke Scott knocked in two of Tampa Bay's three runs, while Matt Moore (1-3) allowed four runs -- one earned -- on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings to absorb the loss.

The Rays have dropped three in a row and six of seven overall.

Tampa Bay committed a club record-tying five errors, three of which came in the second inning. Jones reached on an errant throw by third baseman Sean Rodriguez and took second on a failed pickoff attempt by Moore. After Matt Wieters walked, Moore fanned the next two batters before Steve Tolleson slapped an RBI double down the left field line.

Wieters was able to score as well when the ball got away from Brandon Guyer, who homered in the top of the second.

The Orioles loaded the bases in the fifth and Jones grounded a two-run single up the middle to make it 4-1.

Tampa Bay trimmed its deficit to one in the next frame. Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff base hit and Jeff Keppinger stroked a one-out single before Guyer hit a grounder to third. Tolleson stepped on the bag, but his throw to first couldn't be reeled in by Wilson Betemit. The error kept the inning alive for Scott and the ex-Oriole delivered a two-run single to center field.

"To keep that game that close after making five errors, that just talks about the grind-out attitude of our boys and I love that," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Normally when you make five errors you get blown out in that game and we did not get blown out. We had a chance to win."

Game Notes

To make room for Hall on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated pitcher Brad Bergesen for assignment...Moore recorded six strikeouts, while Matusz fanned five...Tampa Bay was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
