Chicago's Peavy shuts out A's
Apr 24, 2012 - 6:19 AMVideo
Peavy (3-0) gave up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in his 10th career complete game as the White Sox won their fourth straight. Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko each hit a solo home run while Alex Rios went 3-for-5.
"I felt good tonight and I really didn't have any crazy, stressful innings," said Peavy. "In a tight ballgame like tonight, if you think you can finish it you definitely want to finish it."
Bartolo Colon (3-2) was touched for two runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts over seven innings for the Athletics, who have dropped three of four. Yoenis Cespedes hit a double in the loss.
"He threw a lot of strikes tonight," said A's manager Bob Melvin about Colon. "Whenever you're limiting a good hitting team like Chicago to just two runs you're giving us a chance to win."
Chicago got runners on base in each of the first three innings, but it took the long ball to get runs across as Dunn led off the fourth with his fourth homer of the year and Konerko followed with his third round-tripper of the season.
Peavy set down the first nine batters, but Jemile Weeks led off the fourth with a single and Coco Crisp drew a walk. Josh Reddick, though, hit into a double play and Cespedes fouled out to end the frame.
A one-out double from Cespedes in the seventh was wasted as Kila Ka'aihue grounded out as did Seth Smith to stop the threat.
Peavy set down the A's in order in the eighth, and Chicago padded its lead in the ninth on RBI singles from Gordon Beckham and A.J. Pierzynski.
Crisp hit a one-out single in the ninth, but Peavy got Reddick to fly out and Cespedes to pop out to cap the win.
