Guthrie gets rare W as Royals edge White Sox

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jeremy Guthrie pitched eight shutout innings to pick up his first win in a Royals uniform in a 2-1 triumph over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night.

Guthrie (1-3), who made his fourth start for Kansas City since being acquired from Colorado on July 20, allowed five hits and fanned six without walking a batter. The right-hander, who is a combined 4-12 this season, picked up his first victory since May 31 against Houston. Guthrie had lost his previous nine decisions.

"He's gotten progressively a little bit better with each start," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was really good against Texas in his last start and was just absolutely spot-on, spectacular tonight."

Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez homered off Jose Quintana, as the Royals took the rubber match of this three-game series.

Greg Holland allowed an RBI single to A.J. Pierzynski in the ninth, but managed to notch his third save of the year.

Pierzynski and Alejandro De Aza each had a pair of hits for the AL Central leaders, who remained a half-game ahead of Detroit in the division.

Quintana (4-2), who yielded five hits and fanned five over seven-plus frames, suffered his first loss since June 6 against Toronto. He was 3-0 over his previous nine appearances.

Moustakas homered to right field with two outs in the second inning and Perez also hit one to right with two outs in the fourth.

Guthrie retired nine straight batters until Gordon Beckham doubled with two outs in the sixth. Guthrie bounced back to get Adam Dunn looking at strike three.

Dunn doubled to right-center with one out in the ninth. After Kevin Youkilis struck out, Pierzynski grounded a hit up the middle. Alexei Ramirez then hit a soft liner to shortstop Alcides Escobar for the final out.

"We couldn't get anything going," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Until the ninth, it didn't seem like we were mounting anything."

Game Notes

Pierzynski extended his hitting streak to 10 games...Youkilis, who missed Tuesday's game due to a sore right knee, went 0-for-4...Guthrie threw 74 of his 104 pitches for strikes...The White Sox had won four straight series and five in a row at home. They are 13-4 in their last 17 home contests...White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko missed the game with a mild concussion.
