Giants nip Reds with 9th-inning rally
Jul 2, 2012 - 5:08 AMVideo
After seeing the Reds tie the game in the top of the frame, the hosts responded in their turn at the plate against Jose Arredondo (4-2).
Buster Posey kept the inning alive with a two-out ground-rule double, then Pablo Sandoval was intentionally walked. Pagan then lofted a ball to right, but Jay Bruce misread the fly and allowed the ball to drop behind him. Posey scored easily.
"It was a very weird walkoff but I really enjoyed it," said Pagan. "You do whatever it takes to win a ball game."
Santiago Casilla (2-3) earned the win despite allowing three hits over one inning of relief.
Posey finished with three hits and drove in two for the Giants, who salvaged a split in the series.
Todd Frazier collected two hits, including a two-run homer for the Reds, who had won on Friday and Saturday.
Posey singled home Ryan Theriot with two outs in the third, but Frazier put the Reds on top in the fifth with a blast after Ryan Ludwick began the frame with a base hit.
Theriot doubled with one out in the home fifth and came in when Melky Cabrera followed with a single.
Benches cleared with one down in the sixth, as a Bronson Arroyo offering got too close to his counterpart Ryan Vogelsong on a bunt attempt. The Giants starter threw down his bat in anger after fouling the pitch back, and though players milled around the mound, nothing came of the meeting.
Theriot worked a leadoff walk in the seventh and later came around on a Posey single.
Cincinnati tied the game in the ninth, as Cairo singled in Bruce with the bases loaded. However, the visitors failed to forge ahead.
"It's embarrassing," said Bruce. "It's a really, really tough way to lose."
