Volquez shines as Padres edge Dodgers
Sep 26, 2012 - 7:27 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez worked seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.Volquez (11-11) allowed six hits and struck out four to pick up his fourth win in six starts. It is Volquez's highest season win total since he won 17 games with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008.
"Everything is working," said Volquez. "My fastball command is better, my curve, my changeup, everything is better."
Houston Street allowed one run in the ninth, but stranded two runners to notch his 23rd save of the season.
Yasmani Grandal drove in a run for the Padres, who have won two in a row.
Josh Beckett (1-3) was tagged for two runs -- one earned -- on five hits while fanning seven in the loss.
Luis Cruz went 3-for-4 and A.J. Ellis drove in the only run for the Dodgers, who trail the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 1/2 games for the final NL wild card spot.
The Padres scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings. With runners on the corners, Grandal tapped a grounder back to Beckett, allowing Forsythe to score in the fourth.
Will Venable scored when Beckett's throw on Everth Cabrera's bunt-single skipped past Adrian Gonzalez at first base.
The Dodgers pulled within 2-1 in the ninth when Ellis doubled home Cruz. Nick Punto followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Dee Gordon, who replaced Ellis on the bases, and Mark Ellis walked to put runners on the corners.
Street, however, struck out Andre Ethier and got Matt Kemp to fly out to end the game.
"Beckett pitched another great game, the bullpen did a great job and we couldn't score runs the way we should have," said Kemp. "It's kind of the same thing every time."
