Marlins top Mets with 2-run 9th

May 12, 2012 - 5:02 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Greg Dobbs' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Miami Marlins over the New York Mets, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series.

Down 5-4, Giancarlo Stanton started the home ninth with a double to left- center field off Frank Francisco (1-2). Stanton moved to third when Gaby Sanchez flied out and crossed the plate on Emilio Bonifacio's RBI single to right. Bonifacio then stole second and scored the game-winning run on Dobbs' two-out bloop single to right.

"There is nothing to describe that kind of feeling, when you can have one swing of the bat, and a little bloop hit brings 31,000 people to their feet and makes them scream and clap," Dobbs said. "You feel the love, you feel the happiness in the building. It's special. It's extremely special."

Austin Kearns hit a two-run homer for Miami, which was coming off a franchise- best road trip in which it went 8-1 with sweeps of San Francisco and San Diego. Omar Infante went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Heath Bell (1-3) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first win in a Marlins uniform.

Mike Baxter had two RBI for the Mets, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Ike Davis added a solo homer and Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Mike Nickeas each knocked in a run.

"You only can control where you throw the ball," Francisco said of Dobbs' game-winning hit. "You cannot control the results. I thought I made a good pitch. I jammed him. But it ended up in the right spot."

The Marlins put three runs on the board in the first inning. Jose Reyes led off with a triple past the outstretched glove of center fielder Andres Torres. Infante followed with an RBI single to shallow left field. Infante then stole second and scored on Kearns' one-out homer to left.

Davis' homer to right in the fifth made it a 3-1 game.

The Mets tacked on another run in the seventh. Ronny Cedeno hit a one-out single and raced home on Nickeas' double to left-center field. After Torres walked to put men on first and second with two outs, Randy Choate took over on the mound. He got Daniel Murphy swinging to keep it 3-2.

New York added three more runs in the eighth to take the lead. Edward Mujica gave up doubles to David Wright and pinch-hitter Nieuwenhuis, which allowed the tying run to cross the plate. Davis and Cedeno followed with walks to load the bases with one out. Ryan Webb came in from the bullpen and pinch-hitter Baxter greeted him with a two-run double to left-center field.

Miami got one run back in the bottom half of the frame. With Bobby Parnell on the mound, Reyes reached first on first baseman Davis' fielding error. Infante followed with an RBI double to right-center field. Hanley Ramirez flied out for the second out of the inning. Tim Byrdak then came in from the bullpen and got pinch-hitter Logan Morrison swinging to keep it a 5-4 game.
