Swisher provides game-winning hit, Indians down White Sox
Apr 13, 2013 - 3:10 AM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox, 1-0, on Friday. The Indians recorded just three hits, but Swisher's single to right was all the offense Cleveland needed.
Justin Masterson (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and a walk in his outing. In three starts this season, he has allowed just one run over 22 innings and has an ERA of 0.41.
"He's attacking the zone," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He's quick to the plate when the runner gets on. It was fun to watch."
Jose Quintana got the start for the White Sox, and he pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball. However, Jesse Crain (0-1) allowed the lone run and earned the loss.
"He was aggressive," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "He was getting ahead, he was painting. I think maybe the weather had a little bit to do, it's not an easy time to hit when it's cold, but pitcher's like it and he was sharp."
Swisher's single came with two outs in the inning.
Crain came in to relieve Matt Thornton on the mound and struck out Drew Stubbs to start the frame, but then allowed a double to Michael Bourn.
Asdrubal Cabrera was next and he grounded out to second, but Bourn advanced. Jason Kipnis was intentionally walked as Swisher came to bat. He knocked it into right field and brought Bourn home, ending the game.
