Royals outlast Indians
Jul 5, 2013 - 2:09 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Pinch-hitter Salvador Perez's bases- clearing three-run double in the eighth inning pushed the Kansas City Royals past the Cleveland Indians, 10-7, in the rubber match of a three-game set. With the game tied at 7-7 in the eighth inning, Cleveland's pitchers helped out Kansas City. Bryan Shaw (0-2) walked the leadoff man before hitting the only other batter he faced. Rich Hill took over on the mound and intentionally walked Jarrod Dyson following a passed ball. Matt Albers then entered from the bullpen and served up Perez's double.
Lorenzo Cain had a grand slam and Eric Hosmer added a two-run shot for the Royals, who have won three of their last four games.
Luke Hochevar (2-1), who pitched the eighth, was the only Royals pitcher who didn't allow a hit. Greg Holland collected his 19th save of the season.
Drew Stubbs went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBI while Carlos Santana had a two-run double for the Indians, who wrapped up their 11-game road trip with a 7-4 record.
The Royals used two swings to erase a five-run deficit in the sixth.
Following two walks and a fielding error by Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez to begin the frame, Cain delivered a much needed grand slam to dead center on a full-count to cut the lead to one. Cody Allen relieved Jimenez but the result was the same, as George Kottaras welcomed Allen with a solo shot to tie the game.
"To be down five and being able to put up 10 runs after the fifth, that's a huge win," said Hochevar.
In the seventh, J.C. Gutierrez walked Jason Kipnis and surrendered a single to Michael Brantley before being pulled after two batters. On the first pitch Santana saw off Aaron Crow, he ripped a two-run double to the right-field gap to break the tie.
Hosmer's two-run shot to center off Joe Smith in the home half tied the game at seven.
Brantley opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle in the first. The next inning, Stubbs crushed a hanging changeup to deep left field to give the Indians a 3-0 lead.
Stubbs' one-out line drive single to center with the bases loaded in the sixth scored Santana and Mike Aviles to give Cleveland a five-run cushion.
"Things like that happen," said Aviles on the Indians blowing a lead. "There's a big league team on the other side."
