King Felix dominates as M's blank Halos
Jul 14, 2013 - 6:44 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Felix Hernandez pitched eight scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners handled the Angels, 6-0, on Saturday.Hernandez (10-4) gave up seven hits while striking out four for the Mariners, who have won the first two contests of this three-game series. The right- hander reached double-digit first-half wins for the first time in his career.
Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer and knocked in four runs for Seattle, which has homered in 21 consecutive games. The last AL team to homer in at least 21 consecutive games was the Texas Rangers when they set the MLB record with a HR in 27 straight contests during the 2002 campaign.
Angels starter Jered Weaver (3-5) allowed four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
"With the way Felix was throwing, one run would have made a difference," Weaver said. "Smoak had a big home run there. Obviously, it was the difference in the game. Felix was dominant tonight."
Los Angeles' best chance to score early on came in the third. Mike Trout hit a two-out triple before Albert Pujols went down swinging.
The Mariners broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Kendrys Morales and Kyle Seager hit consecutive one-out singles. Smoak followed with an RBI single to right-center field. Josh Hamilton made a strong throw to home but catcher Hank Conger failed to catch the ball.
Smoak's homer in the sixth made it a 4-0 game. With two outs, Morales and Seager singled. This time around, Smoak cleared the wall in center.
"I'm proud of him," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Smoak. "The kid's worked so hard as all these guys do. He's letting his natural ability come through, I think it's not just Smoak there are others that are doing it too. Guys that are right in the middle of figuring it out."
Seattle tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Mike Zunino walked and Dustin Ackley singled to start the frame. A Dane De La Rosa wild pitch moved the runners up one base. Scott Downs came in from the bullpen with one out and threw a wild pitch of his own, allowing a run to score. Nick Franklin walked before Raul Ibanez's RBI single.
The Angels put men on the corners with two outs in the eighth. Pujols, however, grounded out to end the threat.
Yoervis Medina tossed a perfect ninth for Seattle.
