Tigers take advantage of White Sox miscues

Jul 24, 2013 - 6:26 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Rick Porcello pitched seven shutout innings, and Jhonny Peralta and Hernan Perez each drove in two runs to power the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Porcello (7-6) allowed four hits, three walks and had only one strikeout, but won his third straight start.

The AL Central leaders, who have won three in a row, played without third baseman Miguel Cabrera. He was held out of the contest due to a sore left hip flexor muscle.

Paul Konerko had a two-run double in the ninth inning for the mistake-prone White Sox, who have dropped five of their last seven contests. They committed four errors after having three in the opening contest of this four-game series Monday.

"All major league ball clubs are trying to take advantage of any kind of weak link," Detroit outfielder Torii Hunter said. "Baseball's such a tough game. You have to take advantage of those mistakes."

Hector Santiago (3-6) gave up five hits and six runs -- three earned -- over six innings. He had six strikeouts.

Chicago wasted a bases-loaded chance in the first inning when Jeff Keppinger grounded into a force play.

Detroit scored three times in the fourth and sixth frames. In the fourth, Peralta drove in Matt Tuiasosopo, who reached first on Conor Gillaspie's fielding error to start the frame.

After Alex Avila walked to fill the bases, Santiago walked Don Kelly before Perez hit a sacrifice fly to right.

The White Sox put their first two men on base in the fifth, but Josh Phegley grounded into a double play.

Peralta homered to left in the sixth, and later in the frame, Perez tripled to deep left. The hit drove in Avila and Perez scored on an error by right fielder Dayan Viciedo

Joaquin Benoit served up Konerko's double after Al Alburquerque walked the first two batters of the Chicago ninth.

"I don't think anybody saw this coming this year with the way we played last year and we pretty much had the same pieces," Konerko said. "The ball just got rolling down the hill the wrong way and we haven't stopped it. We've tried all different approaches as a team."

Game Notes

White Sox manager Robin Ventura was ejected only three batters into the game by first base umpire Gary Darling after Chicago botched a rundown ... Chicago (39-58) have tied a season-low mark of 19 games under .500.
